Rachel’s New House by Sandi Schulte:

Children are often frightened by change!  In reading Rachel’s New House by Sandi Schulte, readers are introduced to young Rachel who is upset because her family is moving to a new house.  It was easy for me to understand this as I remember such a happening in my own life when my husband and I purchased our dream home.  The problem was that our children considered the move to be more of a nightmare than a dream.  By using the personality of Rachel, Sandi Schulte successfully shows readers how to make this experience less frightening for young children.  This is in keeping with the author’s mission in life which is to inspire and help kids; she does this through her work as an educational entertainment specialist.

This book will guide parents who want to help their children deal openly and honestly with their fears—such as what they face when having to leave the familiar and going into new surroundings.  The author’s words will be entertaining and captivating to young children since they are in rhyme.  They will enjoy the natural flow of the rhythm and quickly grasp the lessons that unfold as the storyline moves forward.  There is a good moral to the story as little Rachel learns the difference between a house and a home.  She also comes to realize that her parents were right when they told her she would like her new room and also make new friends.  Her mother and father had addressed all her fears before the move, encouraging her to talk with them about anything and everything that worried her.  After listening carefully, they talked with her and explained how these worries would be resolved.

This delightful book is beautifully illustrated which will keep young children turning the pages.  Whether kids read Rachel’s New House all by themselves or have their parents read it to them—perhaps as a bedtime story—they will find the book to be entertaining and reassuring.  As a book reviewer, parent, and grandparent, I recommend that caregivers of children purchase this book for those whose lives have been entrusted to them.
